Ste. Marie-aux-Mines

For all those who won't be able to come and see my exhibition at Ste. Marie-aux-Mines, that I have written about so many times now, I plan to show pictures of the quilts that I packed. As I don't know how internet access (or time to try and fiddle with this) will be while I am in "Silver Valley", I uploaded these posts before I left, not knowing which quilts will actually be hanging. So you get to see the full potential...

Packing

This is the list of stuff I still had to do today. Everything was ticked off by around mid-afternoon... what a relief!

My son had a friend over, so I was completely at leisure to roll up the last quilts.

Counting the packages just a second of confusion: why is there one more on the list after I have stripped the walls of the house of everything that has been hanging there (much to my husband’s dismay because two quilts have been removed from his study, too).

But no time for panic – that last one is already in Ste. Marie-aux-Mines as it had been traveling with last year’s competition and I can pick it up either tomorrow or Wednesday morning.
I even had time to prepare some packages of greeting cards should anyone be interested. I had thought about getting a photo-book made, but time ran out. And I think a package like this might be more easily considered ‘affordable’.

I am also taking the last twenty or so eternal calendars.
Tomorrow morning I will pack everything into the car. Ste. Marie, here I come!

Little escap(ad)e: Global Paper 2 in Deggendorf

Last Sunday the unfavourable weather forecast stalled our original plans for the family outing to the lake. Instead, we decided we were going to go see the exhibition Global Paper 2, which is currently on display in Deggendorf.  Until the end of this week only, so hurry up! Deggendorf is a town about 60 km to the east, at the foot of the Bavarian Forest, and they have a very interesting “Stadt- und Handwerkermuseum” (City museum and museum of artisanry) where I have seen interesting exhibitions before. This exhibition on paper art was definitely worth the trip.

Already the first sculpture that you see upon entry, “dance in black” by Heike Schaefer
is fascinating in its construction. Narrowly cut carton paper, glued back together and painted over.

Paper had been knotted

sewn together

"Traveling Cushion", Ulrike Lindner

"Traveling Cushion", detail

folded into the most extraordinary shapes

"Natural Cabinet", Elisabeth Oberrauch, detail

run over by a truck in a piece by Kathleen Loomis (not the quilter, but a namesake), cut up in various ways

"Tschirp", Sarah Schiffer -
do you recognize the two little birds at the bottom,
each filling the air with their song?

"Twenty Five", Alison Harper (one part of three) -
cut up paper coffee cups

rolled up in various ways

"storehouse of joy", Valerie Buess

"Souvenir 4", Michèle Soutif

"Carrying away", Irmgard Potthoff

and many many others.
I had never really thought about how much can be made out of and done with paper.
Very inspiring! A beautifully-made catalogue can be purchased for just under 20 euros.

Getting ready...

Despite the fact that I did finish the last stitches on the last-to-be-finished quilt for Ste. Marie last week, there was still quite a bit to do this week.

The last piece of facing: Shapes 4...
I went and got the hanging rods that I had ordered at the local wood and hardware store.

My wonderfully supportive husband helped me drill the holes and correct some wrongly cut lengths - can't figure out whether I gave the guy at the store the wrong measurements or he misunderstood or what...
I received my freshly ordered roll of plastic bubble, no, bubble plastic, and have been rolling up quilts.

Play of Lines XXVII in the process of being rolled up for transport.

I did a little bit of relaxing with my family, by having an open fire on our terrace two nigths ago.

And I started my 'life after Ste. Marie' by seriously getting to work preparing for the class on patchwork patterns from parquet which I will be teaching on the last weekend of September.

All to avoid 'postnatal depression'...

On Sunday I will be a vendor with my hand-dyed fabrics at a local patchwork fair - yes, that too! - and on Tuesday I will head towards France. Did you know that the former president Sarkozy managed to get a law passed just before he was voted out of office that now requires every car to carry two (!) breath testers for alcohol (two in case on is not working, of course). I have heard his good friend owns a production site for breath testers. In any case, I will have to try and get some close to the border, because they don't sell the right ones here. (They have to have a specific sign that says they have been approved by the French government.)
After a relatively calm few days when I had finished I am now getting a bit nervous again...
Come and see me at the Eglise St. Louise!
